獻媚 Toadyism – Tian Tian Xiang Shang Exhibition 2012

“Tian tian xiang shang” is a 50s Chinese proverb by Mao Zedong which was intended to motivate children. It literally means “making progress every day”. It inspired Danny Yung@Zuni to create a conceptual comic in which “Tian Tian” asked an unending barrage of questions.

This bloodstained “Tian Tian” scuplture is tobyhk’s collaborative effort for “TianTian Xiang Shang” Creativity-for-Community and School Development Programme. The uneven white paint over his body symbolizes the flaws of “Tian Tian” that come naturally as a human being. He feels powerless to change the world. All he can do under the totalitarian rule is to chin up and point forward, unwilling conforming to the proverb.
